I find it interesting that your father was from Greenock. My wife's grandparents integrated to the US from Greenock. I met her in the US in1968. I enlisted in the Navy in Dec '68.. After US Navy boot camp and A school I went to the US Canopus. She was in the yards. When we finished we went to Scotland. This incident happened not long after I left Scotland. I was an EN and made many trips between the ship and Greenock. My wife's family tree goes way back to the Duffs, Fraser, Griffin's and others. They were weavers.

All three western allies had duty (military) trains that ran between Berlin - W. Germany. The British and French trains ran during the day. The American duty train was a night (sleeper) train. They all went through a manifest check by the Soviets, not the East Germans.

I live right next to Soesterberg now and used to go there many times when I was a child :D

The Berlin train from what I remember, started at the hook of Holland, I was given a red card and told to board the red train, make sure you get off at Hanover As the train will be locked, Steel shutters in the windows before it made its way to Berlin I was told that the East Germans were take pot shots at the train So keep away from the windows .

I'm currently watching this from Soesterberg, which is where I grew up. I gotta say, you did an amazing job on this video! I'm an avid model builder and aviation enthusiast (definitely sparked by growing up near the airbase ;) )and thus I regularly visit the museum to gather reference material and chat with the staff. It's good to see it get some international attention. Thank you.

One of my friends grandfathers was US intelligence, not sure what agency or if he was like MacGyver ha, when his work was declassified, he started talking to me about his work with East Germany. He talked about crossing the IGB on all modes, he said he did take both the French and UK trains, which thru back channels gave him an alias with matching paperwork. They always made him an NCO in either nation and got put next to others in his line of work which he knew. He later looked up his aliases at the Stasi Archive and he was surprised to see they didn’t figure him out…

Andy thank you for your report on the former Soesterberg Military Air Base. I was born and raised in Amersfoort South and “Soesterberg” was a household name for me. Around the age of five, 1965/1966, the Phantoms, Starfighters with their typical howling noise, Orions and Aloutte III helicopters and other fighter jets attracted my attention. In the 1970s, mainly the F15s and F16s came to Soesterberg. And if you sometimes saw a passenger plane, it was Queen Juliana (from May 1980, Princess Juliana after her abdication) or other members of the Royal Family returning from their trip abroad. Their residence was Paleis Soestdijk located between Soest and Baarn. When I was in my twenties, I often went to visit the Military Air Base in the 1980s when there was a lot of flying activity. In the late 1970s, the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo neighbourhoods in Soesterberg were built especially for the American military. And in 1987, the first McDrive in the Netherlands was opened on the Amersfoortseweg in Huis ter Heide due to the presence of American troops. Although Soesterberg Air Base is closed, the area around Soesterberg Du Moulinkazerne, Amersfoort Bernardkazerne / De Vlasakkers and Leusderheide is still a military area. In 2022, a Thank you and Memorial monument was unveiled: S.A.M (Soesterberg Air force Memorial). Attention to freedom thanks to the Americans who were present in Soesterberg in the period 1954 - 1994. The monument is located on the Amersfoortsestraat / Oude Tempellaan viaduct where the Aloutte III helicopter is also located.

FYI, at 2:55 : the 32nd received F-15s already in 1978… Starting with F-15As and Bs, getting F-15C/Ds soon after, and later on the F-15A/B MSIP - the latter seemed older, but it was a major step in radar and avionics.

Loved the video. Thanks. We used to go there on hols when we were kids in the 70's/80's with mum and dad. I now live in canada but took my kids back there a few years ago. They loved it too. One of my fav places in the whole world.

I went in 1984 to West Berlin along the drive the air was so heavily polluted by East Germany's then massive chemical industry that I thought my headlights had failed, no they were covered with soot. The transit was easy but GDR cars were positioned every several kms. Had a great time in Berlin, my hosts were wealthy and hip, we even went to a drag party hosted by Freddie Mercury as my hosts step father was a famous architect who designed clubs. I was in my sisters Swiss plated BMW, I with an Australian passport my girlfriend was Swedish, when we arrived in West Germany we were questioned at length as the strange combination triggered their suspicion.

Excellent video, now I know where to visit next time I'm in The Netherlands. But at 16:45 I spotted a mistake. You don't pan from a F-16 to a Tornado. The Tornado is a two-seat with a single tail-fin, what you're looking at there is an F-15 (single-seat, twin tail-fins).

The Dayton Air Museum is free... aircraft of all kinds and more. Two days isn't enough to see it all.

I was 10 months old when the Berlin Wall fell, but I do remember my parents telling me years later, that they didn't think they would see a unified Germany in their lifetime. Yet, from what they told me, less than a year after they said this to each other, the Berlin Wall fell and 11 months after that, Germany was one country again. This video (and the others about the Cold War period) is fascinating to watch, giving a voice to what memorials never can. The Neuewache (I Hope I spelled it right) is another landmark in Berlin that has fascinated me, how it went from Royal Guard House to a centre of German memorial for their War dead from the Weimar Republic, the Nazi Regime, surviving WW2 bombing, through East Germany and the current Federal Republic. The building has had different memorials within it over the years, though in my view, the current one, featuring a woman and child, dedicated to the victims of war and dictatorship, is a simple yet moving memorial. The really incredible thing is that although the uniforms changed over the years, and goose stepping has been deleted, the drill style when the building is guarded is otherwise unchanged since the Weimar Republic

Thank you Andy for making this video! I remember a hoax going around that Osama bin Laden tried to buy some of these backpacks and offered millions of dollars and 2 tonnes of Afghan heroine for them. The whole idea is ridiculous! Even if such technology was technically possible and the weapons were really sold to non-governmental actors, the reality they haven't being used anywhere says it all. I cannot imagine any "bad guys" buying these devices and letting them sit on the shelf for years or decades 🙈.

I'd love to visit Amsterdam next time I'm in Europe, but having had the experience once, I might go for a flight next time. I hear Ryanair is its own experience...

I rode the train from Helmstedt station in West Germany to West Berlin and back in the Fall of 1977. I was chosen for what was then called the Berlin Orientation Tour, and I was issued the requisite Flag orders required to make the trip. it was a bit surreal traveling so slowly through East Germany, doing some unauthorized peaking out through gaps between the blackout curtains and window frames, seeing East German troops standing along the entire route of our super slow journey. As a US Army enlisted man, I was assigned one of the six berths in a compartment where we were supposed to sleep through the journey. I don't think anyone slept on that trip, as we were either attempting to take a peek outside or there were card games and a lot of low level chit chat (we were supposed to stay silent as well as out of sight). once we arrived in West Berlin we had an authorized crossing into East Berlin via Checkpoint Charlie, afforded to us due to the status of forces agreement between the four powers of Berlin. The train ride and that half day in East Berlin form some of the greatest memories of my life.
